“So what do you actually do?” It is a fair question, and one I am asked often. Naturopathy can look vague from the outside, so let me walk you through what really happens in a naturopathy consultation at the clinic.

A long conversation, on purpose

An initial consultation runs for about an hour, and most of it is questions. Not just about the concern you came in with, but about digestion, sleep, energy, stress, diet, movement and history. Naturopathy works from the whole picture, because symptoms rarely exist in isolation: poor sleep drives sugar cravings, stress unsettles digestion, and so on. The aim is to find the threads that connect what you are experiencing.

Looking for causes, not just labels

Where possible I want to understand why a symptom is present, not only what to call it. That might mean going through recent blood test results from your GP, looking at meal timing and food quality, or mapping when in the day energy rises and falls. I work alongside conventional care, not instead of it, and I will refer you to your GP when something needs medical assessment.

The tools of the trade

  • Diet and lifestyle changes: practical, food-first adjustments matched to your actual routine, not an idealised one.
  • Herbal medicine: individually prescribed herbs, chosen for your presentation rather than off-the-shelf formulas.
  • Nutritional support: targeted nutrients where diet alone is not covering the ground.
  • Treatment in the clinic: as an acupuncturist as well as a naturopath, I can combine both approaches where it makes sense.

One person at a time

The heart of naturopathy is individualisation. Five people with the same complaint may leave with five different plans, a theme I explored in Does one size fit all in medicine? What you receive is a plan built for your constitution, your history and your life, with realistic steps rather than a laundry list.

If you have been curious about naturopathy but unsure what it involves, I hope this demystifies it a little. You are always welcome to get in touch with questions before booking.
