Ahil Ganesan discussing nutrition with a patient across a consultation table in the clinic

Naturopathy is a distinct and complete system of health care focused on treating the whole person. It grew out of the European nature cure tradition and rests on a simple principle: treatment should support the body’s own processes rather than override them.

In practice, this means Ahil looks well beyond the symptom that brought you in. A naturopathic consultation examines your diet, sleep, stress, lifestyle, environment and health history together, looking for the factors that may be contributing to how you feel. Treatment then draws on herbal medicine, nutritional supplementation, dietary changes and lifestyle recommendations, introduced in stages so changes are manageable and can be reviewed at each visit.

For a sense of how this thinking differs from a standard prescription, Ahil’s article Does one size fit all in medicine? is a good place to start.

Understanding your health as one whole picture

Two people with the same symptom rarely receive the same treatment. Deficiencies and imbalances show up differently in every body, so Ahil treats the pattern he finds in you, not the textbook version of your condition.

Individualised treatment plans you take an active part in

Referral to your GP or allied health when appropriate

Working With Your Doctor

Ahil asks about every medication and supplement you take, checks for possible interactions before prescribing, and works alongside your GP where needed.

What a consultation involves

On your first visit, Ahil takes a thorough assessment of your current health and history, including your diet, lifestyle and environmental factors, then discusses the approach with you and begins treatment. You leave with an individualised plan you can take an active part in, and if a referral to your GP or an allied health practitioner would serve you better, it is provided.

People often book a naturopathy consultation about digestion, energy, sleep, stress or diet. Ahil will discuss whether naturopathic care is appropriate for your situation, and whether anything else, such as a GP review, is needed first. Practical guides such as 5 ways to (actually) quit sugar in Patient Resources show the style of everyday advice a treatment plan includes.

Frequently asked questions

Naturopathy is a distinct and complete system of health care which focuses on treating the whole person. Naturopathic treatment includes herbal medicine, nutritional supplementation, dietary advice and lifestyle recommendations.

Initial naturopathy consultations are $180, and follow-up consultations are $130. Herbal medicine is roughly $35 per week depending on the prescription. An itemised invoice is emailed after each visit so you can claim any rebate through your health fund.

On your first visit, Ahil will discuss your condition to gain a clear understanding of what you are experiencing, including your diet, lifestyle, health history and environment. He will then discuss the approach and start treatment, with an individualised plan so you can take an active part in your health. If a referral to a GP or allied health practitioner is appropriate, it will be provided.

In some situations it is not appropriate to take herbs alongside particular medications. It is important to tell Ahil about any medications you take so potential interactions can be assessed; where suitable, you may simply be advised to take herbs at a different time of day.

It depends on your concern and how you respond. Your plan is reviewed at each follow-up, and Ahil will discuss with you how long to continue, and when to stop, based on how you are going.
